A medal of merit for the country's successful participation in the multinational military exercise of the Economic Community of Central Africa States (ECCAS) from November 01-22 in Chad, was handed to the chief of Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), gen. Francisco Furtado.

The medal, one of Chad's highest distinctions, was awarded to all chiefs of staff of the ECCAS member countries' armed forces, by the local head of State, Idriss Deby Itno, for the positive results reached during the exercises.

The award was handed by the chief assistant of FAA staff, gen. Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda, during a ceremony attended by high ranking officers of the three branches of the Angolan Armed Forces and guests.

In view of the results achieved in terms of the purposes and goals, as expressed in the declaration of the participants and Europe, America observer countries and guests, the exercise was considered as of high level of performance.

The exercise that went under the name "Barh-El-Gazel 2005", took place in Moussorou, 300 kilometres northeast of N'djamena, capital of Chad.

The event had previously been set for 2003, which did not happen due to the situation of political and military instability the country experienced then.

The recommendation for ECCAS to hold biennial military exercises came from the first meeting of the organisation's defence and security commission held in 2003, in Brazzaville (Congo), having the heads of member state agreed upon.
