Uganda: NGO Renovates Hospital

Gulu — IN a bid to improve on the sanitation in Gulu Referral Hospital, Enlight, an NGO, has renovated the maternity wards of the hospital by installing drainage, water and electrical systems.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the founder of the project, Ms Jessica Byington, said they were moved by the poor condition of the hospital and decided to help.

"These are our mothers and we want them to give birth in a clean environment with water needed for their health care," Ms Byington said.

Sr Milly Okwera, in charge of the maternity ward, said ever since the construction of the hospital, there was no water in the maternity ward, yet they need it.

"We deal with women fluids whereby we need to wash our hands to improve on our hygiene," Sr Okwera said.

The hospital administrator, Mr Paul Ajuk, said they appreciate the move by Enlight project and hope it will reduce on the infections and control of diseases in the ward.

Enlight is a US based project which aims at helping vulnerable groups of people who have no access to the basic needs.
