Court — THE government has asked the High Court to dismiss Justice Alfred Karokora's claims for unpaid retirement benefits worth over Shs161 million.
In its response to a case filed by retired Justice Karokora, the government claims that the judge was paid his entire package in accordance with the law.
Last month the judge, through his lawyers Munanura- Mugabi & Co. Advocates, sued the government for not properly computing his retirement package.
The Judge said the calculations were based on wrong information that he had served for a period of 435 months when actually he worked for 520 months - between 1963 as a magistrate until November, 5, 2006 when he retired .
"The computation did not take into account the increment in the salaries of Justices of the Supreme Court which was raised from Shs33, 264, 000 per annum to Shs58, 924,000," states the judge.
He claims that he was entitled to a compounded pension gratuity of Shs306, 404,800. However, on March 22, 2007 when he received his cheque it was worth Shs144, 698,400.
He says attempts to cover the balance of Shs161, 607,400 have been unsuccessful despite several remainders.
