Bujumbura

Three persons were killed by a gang of robbers last night in the commune of Kamenge located in the north of the capital city of Bujumbura. The incident took place in Mirango quarter. One ex-army officer was held by the inhabitants of Kamenge and would have been killed on the spot if the police had not intervened in time. This officer, Gilbert Nshimirimana, was dismissed from the army, but was not disarmed. Weapons, ammunitions and military uniforms were found in his home.

There is escalation of violence in the whole country this year, although the government has signed a truce deal with FNL-PALIPEHUTU which is still binding. According to independent sources, more than 350 persons were killed during this year. Many cases of violence involve members of the police, demobilised persons and combatants of the FNL-PALIPEHUTU.

The recent murder of a Chinese citizen in the city of Bujumbura by a gang of robbers led the Chinese community to take to the street demanding security, but those responsible for this murder have not yet been found by the police who claim to have leads that will lead to arrests.
