Windhoek — National chess champion Charles Eichab scored double and earned N$700 for his chess mastery during the Wernhil Park Rapid Grand Prix held in Windhoek at the weekend.
Eichab had a perfect score of 7/7 and was 1.5 points ahead of the field. Eichab defeated IM Kudzanai Mamombe from Zimbabwe with the Petroff Defence in 10 moves.
This was the shortest game on the top board. In second place was IM Kudzanai Mamombe, who scored 5.5/7. Toivo Nangula came third with 5.5/7. The best junior was Goodwill Khoa, who scored 4.5/7, followed by Julian Isaaks with 4/7. This is an excellent performance by the youngsters given that they had to play against veterans like Charles Eichab. The winners of the Wernhil Park Grand Prix 2007 were: Charles Eichab with 56 points in total, followed by Kevin Ellis with 38 points and Werner Tjipueja with 30.
The best juniors were Goodwill Khoa with 48 followed by Julian Isaaks with 38. The winners received medals and the Grand Prix champion Eichab received a trophy. Wernhil Park Shopping Centre sponsored gift vouchers of N$500 each and the NCF sponsored N$1 300 for the overall winners of the Grand Prix. The Weekend Chess Academy sponsored two months of free chess training to the juniors.
The Namibia Chess federation thanked their main sponsor, Wernhil Park Shopping Centre, for prizes worth N$5 000 for 10 tournaments.
