Liberia: LCRMB To Protect Copyrights Laws

Liberia Copyright and management board has assured all artists, musicians, culture groups and Liberians of its commitment to protect their product against piracy at all times.

The Copyright board gave the assurance Tuesday at the start of a two-day workshop on the Monrovia/Shefflin highway, to refresh members of the Board on the Copy Right Law of Liberia and Management of the Copy Right Officer.

The Chairman of the Copyright and management board, Cllr. Morley Gray, called on all members of the Liberian collective society to register with the Copy Right office to enable them steak with one voice.

He said for too long Liberian artists have been deprived legitimate benefits from their musical and other artistic works due to piracy. Cllr. Gray however promised that the Board will ensure that the Copyrights laws are sternly enforced.

Also speaking, the Director General of the Liberia Copyright fffice, George Dolu, lauded President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for setting up the Liberia Copyright and management board, and encouraged members of the board to work together as a strong team in the business of protecting the Artistic Industry of Liberia.

According to Mr. Dolu, the Liberia Copyright office was established in 1997, but began its statutory function by 2001. Mr. Dolu also called on government to provide political commitment to the Copy Right Office.

He also wants the Copyright management board to back the Liberia Copyright office to enable it protect the artistic industry of Liberia.

A member of the Copyright board, Amb. Julie Endee said the objective of the two day workshop is to help build the capacity of members of the Board to begin and understand the management procedures of the Liberia Copy Right office.

Amb. Endee said the workshop was important because it will provide insight on the Copy Right Laws. The Liberia Copyrights Office has 4 components including the Copyright management board, the copyrights administration, the Copy Commission and the Copyrights society of Liberia.
