The NWMA, as the award is called, is Nigeria's first, and most widely acknowledged award for Nigerian women born or married in the North, who have distinguished themselves in various areas. The women are recognized in important circles and the international community. The awards have also won wide acclaim for their integrity and thoroughness because only women of great accomplishment from the Northern States and Abuja win the Northern Woman of Merit Awards.
