Mozambique: Portugal Supports Interior Ministry

29 November 2007

Maputo — The Portuguese authorities announced on Wednesday a grant of 1.4 million Euros (about two million US dollars) to Mozambique, for training and equipping the police, the fire brigade and the immigration authorities.

According to a report in Thursday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias", the director of International Relations at the Portuguese Ministry of State Administration, Paulo Caldas, who visited the Mozambican Police Academy (ACIPOL) on Wednesday, said that this money is to be used not only to enhance security in the country but also in training and research.

Caldas added that his country is prepared to receive Mozambican staff from the three sectors to be trained as trainers. They will return to Mozambique to train other Mozambican trainers, so that the country does no longer depend on foreign instructors.

Caldas praised the training undertaken by ACIPOL, and said that other Portuguese speaking countries are considering copying the Mozambican model for training their own high ranking police officers.

During his visit, Caldas offered books on Law, and Police Techniques for the ACIPOL library.

About two hundred police officers, who have completed their course are to be graduated on Friday in a ceremony to be attended by Mozambican President Armando Guebuza and other members of the government.
