Burundi: The Governor of Makamba Arrests Representatives of Teachers' Trade Unions

29 November 2007

Bujumbura — The governor of Makamba province arrested representatives of the two teachers' trade unions. These trade unions are the National Council of Secondary schools' teachers -CONAPES- and the trade union of the Education workers in Burundi- STEB.

The arrest followed a meeting of teachers working at the centre of Makamba. This meeting was convoked by the governor Makamba, Pasteur Bucumi. The representatives of these unions, who have not been consulted before this meeting, were opposed to it.

The arrest of these representatives constitutes a new development. The governor of Makamba indicates that he is allowed to hold a meeting with whomever he likes in his province. Teachers in this province are still demanding the plots for construction which have been agreed upon.

Two confederations of trade unions are planning to go on strike next week. Cabinet ministers who met for the first time today have not yet dealt with the issue of civil servants.
