Bujumbura

The national army and police clashed with FNL combatants in Commune and province Muramvya today morning.

The clashes made no victims on either side. The national defence and security forces inform that FNL combatants were planning to rob the population of Ryarusera in the commune Muramvya.

Hostilities have nearly resumed in all the strongholds of FNL-PALIPEHUTU. The escalation of insecurity follows the declaration of the spokesman of the army, Lt Col Adolphe Manirakiza, who said on last Sunday that FNL combatants have to stay at their positions. The words of this army officer have fuelled insecurity in many areas. In the province of Bubanza, the population has now returned to the wartime habits. The population no longer stays at home for fear of being caught in crossfire between the army and FNL combatants. On this 29November, in Kabezi commune, clashes nearly erupted but the two sides succeeded to avert the situation.

Some non-governmental organisations including the mediation bureau have rejected the recent statements of the army and the FNL-PALIPEHUTU which are widening the gap between these two belligerents instead of helping to find a peaceful way-out.
