Zimbabwe: Somandla, Suluman Add Sparkle to Weekend Gigs

30 November 2007

Harare — Somandla Ndebele, who scooped two music discs last month, will tomorrow seek to prove that his award was not a fluke when he blesses the newly opened Zambuko Sports Bar and Nightclub at Pfukwa Shopping Centre in Warren Park D.

Until now Warren Park D did not have a nightspot where guzzlers could dance the night away to live music, forcing scores to make the "Great Trek" to nearby Westlea in search of fun.

As a liquor wholesale, Zambuko Sports Bar and Nightclub could be just what the doctor ordered especially now that beer prices have gone through the roof. But before finding his way to Zambuko, Ndebele will play at Club Matute tonight where owner Richard Matute has promised revellers an outing free of power cuts. Progress Chipfumo, who leaves for Zambia next week, plays at Club M5 tonight while another send-off gig will be at Club Matute in Mbare on Sunday.

New dendera sensation Suluman Chimbetu takes his debut album Ndomusiya Nani? to Plaza de Castilla in Greencroft tonight before he teams up with veteram sungura artiste Hosiah Chipanga at the Traveller Council Beerhall in Dzivarasekwa tomorrow. On Sunday, the pair moves to Denton Sports Bar in Highfield for an afternoon show where Kapfupi has been accorded a slot courtesy of Chikonaz Promotions.

Succulent jazz concerts continue to be the calling cards at Jazz 105 when Bob Nyabinde invades the home of jazz tonight. Energetic performer Lwazi Tshabangu, who is booked for a performance at the same venue tomorrow, has promised fireworks to his loyal fans. BV Labien Musica will be gyrating at Whispers Nightclub in Highfield tonight before winding up at Club M5 tomorrow where they will be joined by the Girls of Peace and Millennium Queens.

Percussion jazz prince Victor Kunonga caters for his legion of fans at Mannenberg Jazz Club tonight while performance poet Sam Monro -- better known as Cde Fatso - partners Chabvondoka Crew for their regular afternoon shows. Township jazz maestro Tanga Wekwa Sando croons at the same venue later in the evening. Mawungira Enharira retained the Zimbabwe Music Awards Best Mbira award on Wednesday and will no doubt be celebrating that accolade with a "Thank God it's Friday" gig at their favopurite hunting ground - the Book Café - tonight. Old school music specialists Luck Street Blues - featuring veteran jazz blues/jazz guitarist Dave Ndoro -- return to the same venue for their regular Saturday concerts tomorrow.

Kireni Zulu, who is enjoying a purple patch with his latest album Sekuru, performs at Glen Norah Hall tonight. It's a rare feast of looks on the ramp tonight at the official launch of the Miss Biggy Matofotofo 2007 at Borrowdale Wimpy where 21 contestants are parading the fuller African figure. Tomorrow, motorists get a rare chance to ogle at the finalists, as they will be washing cars at Avondale Wimpy as well as serving breakfast and lunch.

Pageant founder Lwazi Mbowa is also toying with the idea of Mother Christmas to be chosen from among the finalists. Tongai Moyo partners Leonard Zhakata and Albert Nyathi for the World Aids Day pre-launch musical show at the Civic Centre in Masvingo tonight. The actual Aids gala will be at Tshovani Stadium in Chiredzi tomorrow where Victor Kunonga shares the stage with local groups. After the Masvingo affair, the irrepressable Utakataka Express invade Sparkles Nightclub in Zvishavane tomorrow before returning to their Kwekwe base where they will perform at Mbizo Inn on Sunday.

Rhumba wonderkid Madiz is expected to bring the roof down in Bindura with a show at the Coach House Inn tonight where resident DJs will be spinning the turntables as well.

Cephas Mashakada, assisted by Douglas Katsvairo and the Star Girls, get the ball rolling in Concession tonight, play in Glendale tomorrow and conclude the weekend with a gig at Shamva's Wadzanai Cocktail Bar on Sunday. Let the fun begin . . .
