Maputo

Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Friday reiterated the determination of his government to wage a successful battle against crime and corruption.

He was speaking at the Maputo Police Academy (ACIPOL), at a graduation ceremony for 202 students, only 36 of whom were women.

The graduates included 50 police officers who had attended a course on leadership, command and administration. Guebuza said the government is determined to provide better conditions for the police so that, with the collaboration of the new graduates, "we shall achieve success in the struggle against corruption".

Police training, he declared, is fundamental for improved performance in the battle against corruption and the other obstacles to the country's development.

"Society is evolving, and very rapidly", said Guebuza, "and so adequate responses are expected from police officers to the dynamics that characterise this society and its citizens".

The government considered that continual training, and specialisation, as well as ensuring that police units are properly equipped, were key factors in giving the police the capacity to guarantee public order, and defend citizens and their property.

He called on the new graduates to use their knowledge to make a qualitative improvement in police performance and in serving the public.

"We call on you to put into practice, without delay, the oath you have just sworn, and put the knowledge you have acquired here to the test", Guebuza added.
