Eritrea: 114 Million-Nakfa Potable Water Supply Project Under Implementation in Tessenei Town Jointly By the Government And European Union

A potable water supply project is under implementation in Tessenei town at an expenditure of over 114 million Nakfa jointly by the Eritrean government and the European Union. About 40,000 residents of the town would have access to potable water supply once the project is finalized.

The director general of water resource department, Mr. Mebrahtu Eyasu, pointed out that the Government is giving top priority to the expansion of potable water supply in all parts of the country. He also noted that the project is being undertaken through Segen Construction Company and that it is expected to be finalized within two years.

Indicating that Tessenei rich in underground water resources due to the flow of Gash river, Mr. Mebrahtu said that two additional wells are being dug in addition to the construction of two big water tankers. He went on to explain that a study has already been made to implement similar water supply projects in the towns of Agordat, Barentu and Haikota.

The project involves the installation of 80 km-long water pipelines, construction of 60 water distribution stations and the installation of more than 1,200 tap waters in households.

The Administrator of Gash-Barka region, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, on his part said that as the project is being undertaken by the national companies, it would provide opportunities to citizens to acquire skills. He stressed the need for sound management of the project so that it may render durable service.
