Maputo

A gang of criminals murdered a security guard on Thursday might when they raided an office of the publicly-owned electricity company EDM in the outlying Maputo neighbourhood of Benfica.

According to a report in Saturday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias", the only people on the premises when the thieves attacked, at around 20.00, were two security guards.

The thieves pretended to be clients of EDM with a problem they wanted solved. When one of the guards, Gregorio Cordeiro, from the company SINER Seguranca, went to the door, they overpowered him and dragged him into the building.

Once inside they also overpowered the second guard and tied him up. But when Cordeiro put up a fight, one of the gang members shot him dead at point blank range.

The thieves then loaded the office strongbox, containing the day's takings from clients paying their electricity bills, onto their vehicle and made their getaway.
