Mauritius: Mckinnon Holds Talks With Country's Leaders

Prime Minister Ramgoolam expressed his appreciation for the Secretary-General's efforts in championing the interests of small island states

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon, who is on a visit to Mauritius, held talks with President Sir Anerood Jugnauth and Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam on 3 December 2007.

He also met with the Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Burty David.

In his bilateral meetings with them, the Secretary-General discussed the mandates of the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala, Uganda, which took place from 23 to 25 November. These included the issue of respect and understanding to bridge differences among communities and cultures; Commonwealth membership criteria and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Ways to enhance support for the Commonwealth Youth Programme was also a topic of discussion.

On domestic issues, the plight of the displaced Chagos islanders, who have been residing in Mauritius for the past three decades, was discussed.

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the Secretary-General's efforts in championing the interests of small island states and for his support in other areas over the years.

Mr McKinnon, who was on a farewell tour of Mauritius and Seychelles from 27 November to 3 December, returns to London on 4 December.
