Nigeria: Country Needs Prayers, Says Gowon

3 December 2007

Lagos — Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has said Nigeria needs prayers to attain greater heights and peaceful co-existence.

He said Nigerians also need to be prayerful, because prayer has the potentials of solving the nation's political, social and economic problems.

Gowon, who is also the leader of Nigeria Prays, said this in Calabar when he met with Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke, at the presidential Lodge, Calabar. He added that the whole country, including leadership of the three tiers of government needs prayer, because of the different ugly incidents occurring within its various geo-political zones.

Gowon said the main purpose of Nigeria Prays, which was formed in 1996, is to pray for the nation and seek God's intervention in its political, social, ethnic and economic problems.

He prayed God to grant the nation peace, adding that he was in the state for a one day prayer programme at the Cultural Centre, Calabar.

Responding, Imoke described Gowon as a worthy son of Nigeria that has committed his entire life, time and effort to the political, economic and spiritual development of his fatherland.

Imoke said as a role model to Nigerians, Gowon as a former head of state and statesman, had since 1996, consistently taught Nigerians the essence of prayers to solve their problems and inculcate in Nigerians the habit of prayers.
