Nigeria: Militants Kidnap 75-Yr-Old Father of Ex-Lawmaker

Port — Niger Delta militants have kidnapped a 75-year-old father of a former member, Rivers State House of Assembly, Pa Christian Mba in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

This is as kidnappers in Aba last weekend released a director at the state ministry of education, Mrs Agodi Onyeaso and the son of the state auditor-general abducted at different locations.

The auditor-general is Rev Humphrey Eche.

Announcing the abduction of his father in Port Harcourt, Hon Christian Mba told Daily Champion that the masked kidnappers numbering eight stormed Egbormung, Andoni local government area, Rivers State about 12 midnight to pick his dad.

He also said that the militants on arrival shot sporadically in the air to scare people, adding that some residents of the reverine area dived into the river for protection.

The former lawmaker equally said that the militants denoted some explosives in their operations.

In the melee, the hoodlums broke into Pa Mba's room and whisked him away to an unknown destination.

He noted that his father, was sick and has not been seen by his family members, adding that efforts are on to trace the source of his kidnap and also seek his release.

The former state lawmaker called on the state security to intensify security especially along the riverine communities, adding that Andoni, once a peaceful place is gradually becoming a den for militants.

He said life is no longer safe in the riverine communities in the Niger Delta region.

Local sources said the community is still in panic state since the incident occurred as some old men stay indoors in their respective homes in the affected community.

Our correspondent reports that no group has claimed responsibility of the act even as fears grips the entire community as one of their own had been taken hostage by yet to be known armed groups in the region.

Contacted, Rivers Police command spokesperson, Ireju Barasua phone was switched off when called for confirmation, while that of the police commissioner, Mr Felix Ogbaudu rang without any response.

Daily Champion scooped that Mrs Onyeaso, whose husband, Rich is also the national chairman of Scripture Union (SU) walked into freedom last weekend. She was abducted last Wednesday in her residence by kidnappers in broad-day in Umuahia, Abia state capital.

Eche's son whose name could not be ascertained at press time was abducted earlier by kidnappers.

The release of the duo has been a subject of vigorous prayer meetings amongst the country as the victims are relations of Christian leaders.

It would be recalled that gunmen also invaded Umuahia on November 7, 2007 and abducted the director, National Roots Crops Institute (NRCI), Dr Kenneth Nwosu.

He was later released after payment of undisclosed ransom.
