Namaacha
Mozambique's Deputy Minister of Public Works, Gabriel Mutisse, said on Monday that in 2008 positive results of reforms under way in the National Roads Administration (ANE) should be visible.
He was addressing the official ceremony in the southern town of Namaacha to open a capacity building course for ANE executive directors and provincial delegates. This is the first course of its kind following a public tender to recruit the ANE general director, four executive directors and ten provincial delegates.
Mutisse said that in 2008, the ANE should guarantee the rehabilitation of about 300 kilometres of roads, including key stretches of the country's main north-south highway, and on the road between the central provinces of Manica and Tete.
Maintenance, he added, should be undertaken on 17,000 kilometres of roads next year, while improvements should be made to over 200 kilometres.
|
He added that ANE is planning to start or to complete negotiations with various foreign partners for the funding work on 1,105 kilometres of roads, particularly in the northern provinces, and along the Beira-Zimbabwe highway.
Speaking of the course, Mutisse said the government expects transparency from ANE managers at all levels of the institution.
He called on them "to eliminate once and for all acts of corruption and nepotism, and end the current climate of mistrust prevalent among the executive and technical staff".
