Dutse — About 40,000 children in Birnin Kudu area of Jigawa State were immunized against the polio virus in the just concluded immunization exercise.
Daily Trust recalls that the figure surpassed the earlier 27,000 target set by the National Programme on Immunization (NPI) in the state.
This was disclosed by the council's care taker committee chairman Alhaji Sani Abdullahi in an interview with Daily Trust in Dutse. He said the council made the achievement as a result of the massive enlightenment and door to door campaign embarked upon together with the assistance of other stake holders.
Other strategies implored by the council towards the success of the exercise included the involvement of self help groups, traditional rulers and provision of gift items to each child immunized during the exercise.
Alhaji Sani Abdullahi explained that the state government had rendered great support towards the release of N1.7 million to the council.
He also expressed appreciation on the mass turn out of people during the exercise which he said was unprecedented since its launch last year, adding that it restored great hope and confidence towards the eradication of the disease in accordance with WHO and UNICEF targets.
According to the chairman, the council also sourced additional N400,000 in addition to the state government's fund for logistics, being the local government area with the highest population in the state.
