Ethiopia: Country, Japan Sign Grant Agreement Worth $13.9 Mln

A grant agreement to the amount of 13.97 million USD was signed on Tuesday between Ethiopia and Japan for the procurement of fertilizers and water supply in Tigray region, and for the construction of primary schools in Oromiya region.
Japanese ambassador to Ethiopia Kinichi Komano and Minister of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED) Mekonen Manyazewal signed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments.
In his speech after the signing ceremony at the MoFED Conference Hall, Ambassador Kinichi Komano said the support of the Japanese government has further expanded its support in supply of water and sanitation, and the education sector in, respectively the Tigray and Oromia Regional States.
He said Japan-fund made possible the training of more than 1,700 people who work in the water and sanitation sector at the Ethiopian water technology center (EWTEC).
The training was part of the needs of national human resource in water supply sector and reviews the human development plan of UAP.
The grant is said to be made available within the current fiscal year.
Expressing gratitude for Japanese assistance in Ethiopia's development efforts, Minister Mekonnen assured the ambassador that the government will see to it that the Japan grant is utilized for the desired project and within the within the allotted time frame.
Mekonnen added that the Japanese grant which contributes toward the supply of pure water and expansion of primary schools happens to be the key pillar of our five year development plan." The government of Japan has been extending such grant aid for agriculture inputs to help pursue a trend of enhancing food productivity through supporting efforts of the Ethiopian government.

The Japanese government has been providing assistance to Ethiopia since 1985.
