Speaking to reporters in connection to the annual event being celebrated for the fourth time globally, Commissioner Ali Suleiman said the fight against corruption was paying off with an active and growing participation of the public with out whose support, he said, the fight woulhave been in jeopardy.
"The public participation in exposing and providing information is encouraging. We have seen massive reservation at the initial stage. But these things are changed," ghe said. He said more and more people are now "positively co-operating" with our office.
Appreciating efforts done to protect the safety and wellbeing of witnesses in corruption cases, the commissioner acknowledged that some 40 individuals suffered with minor injuries as a result of testifying to the court.
The commissioner said his office will have to finalize 126 pending cases in court.
He said marking the day; the commission renews its full commitments not only to expose corruption but also to prevent it from happening in the first place.
Commissioner Ali added that his commission expects to upgrade its conviction from its initial 75-79% to 85% in the new millennium.
According to the commissioner, the FEACC has made a very successful accomplishment in Addis Ababa in particular as regards to corruption surrounding the proprietorship of land.
Since its formation in May 2001, the Commission received 9,000 tipped-off corruption allegations from the public, of which 168 cases were settled in court with a verdict varying from 3-19 years imprisonment and from 500 to 20,000 birr fine.
