There is now no hope for HIV/AIDS patients in Burundi to get assistance. The International Fund for the Fight against AIDS, malaria, and Tuberculosis will not support Burundi in fighting against AIDS for the year 2008. The government of Burundi presented shallow projects to this institution which in turn rejected them. This institution have demanded clarification over the assistance regarding ethnic background.

The government of Burundi is still unable to get answer to this question. The coordinator of UNAIDS in Burundi, Mr. Gaston Legrand, advises the government of Burundi to look for other donors in this sector.

The president of the Republic said last week that donors of Burundi are gradually committing a genocide for which they must be sued. The position of the President of the Republic, however, is not shared by the Jeanne Gapiya, an HIV positive person who represented Africa on the invitation of the French President, Nicolas Salkozy, on the international day for the fight against HIV/AIDS. Gapiya says that the government of Burundi would rather look for assistance within the bilateral cooperation.

Burundi is one of the countries where HIV/AIDS claim the lives of many people, leaving many orphans in its wake. 6&percnt of the population is HIV positive. This rate continues to increase in the countryside while it tends to stabilize in the main cities.
