Two confederations of trade unions have decided to extend their strike for two days. The COSYBU and CSB jointly decided this extension on the grounds that two of the members of these confederations of trade unions were arrested in Cankuzo province. COSYBU and CSB indicate that an unlimited strike may be called for if these members are not released.
The three-day strike that started last Monday on the grounds that pledges of the government to civil servants have not been honoured would have ended today. COSYBU and CSB, however, still have points of disagreements with the government. Civil servants dislike that fact that allowances which were allotted to them disregarded the length of their service.
The strike followed the failure of the government to pay the 34 percent increase in salary with retroactivity to civil servants as promised by the head of state on May Day.
Civil servants are outraged by the substantial increase in salary for the defence and security bodies while the government claims that its finances are troubled. The recent explanations that the government would have started to pay the 34 percent to civil servant has the former finance minister, Ms Denise Sinankwa, mismanaged, has not convinced many.
