Johannesburg — PRESIDENT Thabo Mbeki's re-election strategy, which has seen African National Congress (ANC) chairman Mosiuoa Lekota leading public attacks on ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma, appears to have backfired.
It is believed that Lekota has been told by those close to Mbeki to "lay off" Zuma. Sources in the Mbeki camp said yesterday the strategy to attack Zuma had "clearly failed" because it had further painted Zuma as "a victim of a conspiracy".
