East Africa: AAU Hosts Regional Environment Meeting

Addis Abeba — The Second Horn of Africa regional environment meeting is taking place at the Addis Ababa University, Science Faculty here in Addis Ababa. .

The week long meeting which begun on Monday has brought together environmental actors from member states of Horn of Africa regional network: Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Sudan and Somalia to exchange ideas, experiences and to partner with each other in order to jointly develop practical environmental projects.

Since recent years environment and harmful effects of climate change has become one of the major concerns of the world, particularly Africa which is said to be the hardest hit.

More than ever before, the world is likely to face sever energy crisis. Population explosion and un sustainable use of biomass have caused severe environmental degradation and climate change in the Horn of Africa, experts in the field observe.

The fear that unless the world intervenes soon, the environmental degradation will ultimately lead to more conflict as exhibited in Darfur and eventually to collapse as witnessed in Rwanda.

The Horn of Africa regional environment center and network aims to improve environmental governance and management by cooperating with relevant business and private sector organization as well as government institutions to bring academia closer to both practitioners and policy makers.

The center and network especially tries to facilitate the development of hydro - power, Solar power, wind power, bio- gas and other biomass energy production.

The Regional network was launched exactly one year ago in December 2006.

On the sidelines of the meeting, different renewable energy resources are being displayed for the participants.
