Ethiopia: Study Underway On Restructuring ETC - Ministry

The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation will soon be put under restructuring of its organization aimed at enhancing its delivery of service to customers, the Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference where the Ministry's five year strategic plan was presented, Minister Junedin Sado said the restructuring was being undertaken by a foreign consulting firm.

He said the restructuring will enable the Corporation to serve up to 15 million subscribers to its service.

ETC has over the last few years been embroiled in a series of Managerial crisis which. according to media reports, cost the corporation millions.

It has also proved a source of embracement to its clients who regularly voice dissatisfaction over the corporation's customer handling.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications controls and supervises the corporation plus other prominent government business such as the Ethiopian Airlines.

Speaking of the national airline, Junedin said the Ethiopia airlines was increasingly proving to be competitive in the air transport industry.

He said as part of its continued efforts to connecting the world, the airline has expanded greatly with its total number of destinations in the Far East, North America and the African Continents fast approaching 60.

The Minister highlighted the maintenance works of the run way, upgrading of the passengers terminal at including some renovation activities to upgrade major regional airports-Bahirdar, Diredawa and Mekele airports.

He said while all these tasks have been completed, new construction was underway at Jimma, Gode, Gambella, Assosa, Humera, Jinka, Denbidollo and Kombolcha airports.

Junedin Sado also spoke of what his ministry set out to accomplish, regarding the road transportation sector.

He said as part of efforts to curb transportation service shortages in the city, the government was planning to import 1000 mini buses to be deployed in the capital..

The minister said the first batch of 500 mini-buses is expected to arrive here the year 2007, January the next by the end of 2008.
