Ethiopia: Conference Discusses Role of Accountants in Emerging Economy

Addis Abeba — The role of accountants and auditors was under spotlight at a high level meeting of professionals in their respective fields.

The one-day conference at the UNCC deliberated on various issues revolving around promoting ethics and eradicating tax evasion and fraud, the current rising tide of global inflation and how best to deal with it.

Participants of the meeting which was organized by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Ethiopia also raised issues on Africa's relationship to the global accountancy profession.

Speaking on the occasion, ACCA Country Manager Hikmet Abdella said the conference was an opportunity that brought together an outstanding line up of speakers to address the key issues facing accountants and auditors in an emerging economy such as those in Ethiopia.

She said the conference also offered a best chance for professionals in the fields of accounting and auditing to discuss the way forward for the profession and the economies they serve.

The Country Manager added the conference enabled the delegates to take stock of where the profession is now and where it wants and needs to be in the future.

Hikmet presented on the theory of financing and the role of the professionals in consulting small businesses, exploiting on potential investment to contribute towards all success of national economies She said given the rapid pace of change, accountants and auditors are likely to become more crucial to the economy.

On a final note, Hikmet said with a help of a strong accountancy profession forming a vital part of the infrastructure of the successful developing economies, an increasingly improving situation was emerging for the role of the professional as well.

ACCA is one of the fastest growing global professional accountancy with a member count of 115,000 and 296,000 students all over the world.
