Ten Zimbabwean artists will participate alongside 10 others from Mozambique and South Africa in an art exhibition and workshop early next month in Maputo.

Five artists - Shadreck Simbarashe Chitima, Enneke Mukomberanwa, Issa Sims, Collin Nyarumba and Stephen Garan'anga - will attend the workshop that runs from January 18 till February 2 at the National Art Museum.

The other five -- Tago M Tazvitya, Alec Jacob, David Chinyama, Auxilia Tatisa and Victor Fire -- will have their art pieces on exhibition at Centro Cultural Franco Mocambicana from February 5 till February 25. Running under the theme "Youth: An artist's vision", the workshop focuses on quality and innovation in work from established artists of all generations as well as new or undiscovered talent.

Eline Jakobs who is co-ordinating the project said in all the three countries, working from their turbulent histories and facing the challenges in today's world, contemporary artists are looking for new ways to express themselves. "In this manifestation we aim to show the developments in contemporary three-dimensional art in the different countries and at the same time provide a platform for exchange," she said. Jakobs noted that in all the three countries, art has had to deal with tremendous changes in society, often inhibiting, but also bringing new impulses.

She also stated that art however, does not exist in isolation and interaction or exchange of ideas between artists is imperative for innovation and growth. Jakobs works with Muvart, a unique association of contemporary artists, which was set up in 2003 to stimulate the practice of contemporary art and spread it out in Mozambique and abroad.
