Bujumbura — The confederation of trade unions of Burundi, COSYBU, is saddened by the recent increase in salary for the workers of the Court of Accounts whose pay has risen from 700,000 francs to 1350,000. This increase was decreed on 28 November 2007.
COSYBU leaders consider this to be characteristic of a double standard policy which is aimed at creating divisions between civil servants.
Among other things the payment of the 34 percent increase of salaries as promised by the President of the Republic led COSYBU and CSB to go on strike. The recent computation of the increase has not satisfied civil servants on the grounds that it did not take into consideration their length of service. The government still holds that the payment will start in January 2008 when the state's finances have improved.
The COSYBU and CSB have extended their strike for two days following the arrest of four of their members in Cankuzo and Ruyigi provinces. These confederations maintain that as long as these members are not released, they will not return to work.
