Congo-Kinshasa: Archbishop of Kinshasa Appointed

Kinshasa — Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday December 6, appointed Archbishop Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya of Kisangani, as the new Archbishop of Kinshasa.

Born in Mongobele in 1939, Archbishop Pasinya was anointed priest of Inongo Diocese in December 1963 before being appointed auxiliary bishop of the same diocese in 1980. He was appointed the auxiliary bishop of Kisangani Archdiocese in 1981 and became its archbishop in 1988.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Kinshasa, Congo's capital measures an area of 8,500 sq. kms with a population of 7 million of whom 3.6 million (52 %) are Catholics. There are 1,038 priests and 3,062 religious men and women.
