Ethiopia: Property Registration Law Being Discussed

8 December 2007

Bruck Shewareged — Corruption Commission head Ali Suleyman said Thursday that discussions have been held with government officials to issue a law providing for property registration.

The commission had already submitted a document on property registration to the government. Ato Ali said that if the document is accepted, the task of writing the draft law will follow.

Ato Ali added that the property registration law could have an effect on containing corruption but it is not the sole factor which can eradicate corruption.

The commissioner disclosed that during the current fiscal year other laws, including a witness protection law, could be issued.

Ato Ali added that the anti-corruption commission is working hard to retrieve public property that had been stolen.

He disclosed that the commission intervened to put a halt to illegal land distribution which could have cost the government more than a hundred million birr in lease money.

He said that more than 100,000 sq.m. of land which had been illegally given to people in Addis Ababa was retrieved and ownership certificates of those plots of land revoked.
