The government is finalizing preparation to construct the first of its kind Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Park near the Bole International Airport.

The assessment and "high-level" design of the project is being undertaken by one of India's giant ICT companies called WITRO in collaboration with the US-based technology firm, CISCO.

The design of the project is scheduled to be completed in March 2008, and will soon be followed by construction of physical infrastructure including access roads, water sewerage system, electric and telephone installations, it was learnt.

The core objectives of the project are reducing the rate of unemployment in the technology sector, securing foreign currencies in ICT services and facilitating ICT development in the country.

The project reflects the government's commitment to the development of the ICT sector. The government will also soon start providing special incentives for investment in the ICT sector, according to sources.

The ICT Park will be constructed on a 200-hectare plot of land some twenty minutes' drive from the airport.

The government is committed to launching the project to raising the ICT sector to an industry-level business, with the country having enormous potential to gain from the outsourcing of the ICT services, according to informed sources.
