Burundi as the rest of the world has celebrated the 59th anniversary of the Human Rights charter. This day was celebrated in Ngozi province where a yearlong festival was launched.
On this occasion the leading human rights association in Burundi, Ligue Iteka, drew up heartbreaking results of the last ten months. According to the chairman of the association, Mr. Jean Marie Vianney Kavumbagu, since January to October 393 persons were killed, 301 women were raped and 123 were tortured.
The death toll of those who are killed either by the police or armed bandits continues to grow. Yesterday, a person in a taxi was shot dead in Kanyosha by the police.
This landlocked tiny coffee growing nation of 8 million is trying to recover peace after more than a decade of civil war that claimed more than 300,000 lives. The integration of the former armed political movements into the national army and the police was thought to bring security to the country. Every available evidence has however shown that these two bodies have been unable to carry out their tasks satisfyingly as some of their elements have gone astray as to be involved in a number of armed robberies.
