Burundi: The Price of Oil to Hike Again

11 December 2007

Bujumbura — There seems to be no oil in petrol stations in the capital Bujumbura. Shortage of oil started yesterday. Today, few petrol stations could give more than 20 litres of oil. Some sources indicate however that there is no shortage of oil. Importers of oil products are rather trying to exert pressure on the government in a bid to increase the price of oil. The price would increase by 300 francs to reach 1700 francs.

Oil Importers addressed two letters to the minister of Commerce in September and November demanding the rise of the price of oil. They motivated their demand by the price of crude oil that has hiked at the international market.

The Observatory for the Fight against Corruption and Economic Embezzlement (OLUCOME) is opposed to the rise of oil price. OLUCOME says that Burundi should use the less demanding corridor in transporting oil. This organisation reveals that two billion francs went missing from the Special Fund for Oil. This fund was set up to enable the government to face nationally the fluctuations of oil price at the international market.
