The British Council is keeping its promise. 42 primary school mentors could benefit from the summer school set up by the centre last week. These mentors were recently recruited to support primary teachers across the four regional zones of the country and this 4-day ICT-based programme held by the British Council should help them in their mission.

This idea of holding a summer school goes back to last year after the British Council submitted its very depressing report to the ministry of Education on the level of English in local schools. The report showed that students were not able to understand, learn or use the English language properly even after secondary school.

The objective of this workshop is to help participants to integrate ICT or learning technologies via quality in-service ICT training. The integration of ICT with learning methodologies can definitely have a positive impact in classrooms.

Among other areas, this programme covered the "integration of web resources into lessons and the practical use of web resources in the classroom". It also helped to "design lessons with an awareness of copyright issues and to design one's own web-based lessons," according to the PR, events and project manager at the British Council, Yasmin Hedoo.

The three teachers delivering the course - Dr Ann Rossiter, Richard Hargreaves and June-Rose Davis - are piloting an innovative new Global Product for Teachers ICT training which will later on lead to the tailoring of similar products for the Southern African region.
