Asmara

President Isaias Afwerki today received and held talks with the High-level Joint Military and Security Committee of Eritrea, Sudan, Libya and Chad.

In the meeting, the Committee presented an assessment of its accomplishments and lauded the role played by Eritrea, especially that of President Isaias in normalizing Sudanese-Chadian relations and, in particular, in easing the situation recently created along the border of the two countries.

President Isaias pointed out that during his stay in Portugal he held talks with the leaders of the two countries as regards the issue. He further called on the High-level Joint Military and Security Committee to meet the leaders of the four member states so that it could give additional impetus to the implementation of the points endorsed in the declaration adopted in its current meeting in Asmara.

The High-level Joint Military and Security Committee concluded its meeting that was held from December 10 to 11 here. It is to be noted that in line with the initiative taken by the leaders of Eritrea, Libya, Sudan and Chad during their meeting on February 2006 in Tripoli, which aimed at promoting peace, stability and good-neighborliness between Chad and the Sudan, meetings have been taking place to implement the Tripoli Agreement. The meeting of the High-level Joint Military and Security Committee in Asmara was a continuation of that.
