Ho — The Paramount Chief of the Kpalime Traditional Area in the Volta Region , Togbe Agbi Yao VII has expressed concern about the lack of potable drinking water in the area, even though they are surrounded by the Volta Lake.
According to him, the area lost many hectares of its rich farmlands to make way for the construction of the Akosombo Dam, but has been denied the clean, treated water drawn from the lake, leaving the people to their fate.
Togbe Agbi Yao said this at a durbar to climax the week-long "Kpalikpakpa" festival of the chiefs and people of the Kpalime Traditional Area in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region last Saturday.
He pointed out that the proposed water project in the area had not been started, but a similar water project was carried out through Kpeve to Ho and beyond, but the people near the water source, the Volta Lake, continue to suffer as they have no decent source of drinking water.
Togbe Agbi Yao noted that since the government considered sound health as a prerequisite to productivity, it was incumbent upon it to help address the water problem facing the people in the Kpalime area, to avoid further infection by water-related diseases as a result of the use of unhygienic water.
The chief also advocated for the establishment of a health facility in the area, because the absence of such facilities like a clinic compelled the people to travel long distances before they could get access to health care.
Togbe Agbi Yao appealed to the government to pay attention to the dilapidated state of basic schools in the area.
He as well called for the establishment of a Senior High School for the area, to save the youth from the difficulties they pass through to attend secondary school.
He commended the government for its development plans and policies under the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mrs. Woyram Boakye-Dankwa, whom he described as hardworking.
The DCE urged the people to support government plans and programmes aimed at accelerating development, noting that the development needs of the people would be addressed.
She observed that the creation of the district was to help enhance development of the area and asked the people to support the assembly in its efforts to bring development to them. In a speech read for him, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Dr. Kwame Ampofo assured the people that he would make available ¢200 million to the area, as seed money to start the Senior High School project.
