Bujumbura — Brand Ndarishikanye was buried yesterday. After the mass that was said at the cathedral Regina Mundi a long procession made its way to the Place des Martyrs de la Démocratie. People marched with lit candles and white ribbons to symbolize their hope for human rights and to protest against growing criminality. In torrents of tears at Mpanda cemetery the mourners called on the government to combat the growing trend of lawlessness and investigate the death of their beloved one.
The late Ndarishikanye â-šlived like a candle in the wind". He was shot dead by a gang of robbers in military uniforms at his home in the Commune of Rohero as he was going to work on Monday 3rd December. He was a thriving moneychanger who employed more than a hundred persons. He owned the Wall Street Forex Bureau.
Before Mr. Brand was killed he demanded the assistance of the police to insure his security. The police downplayed his demand and are now forced to argue that Mr. Ndarishikanye's letter reached them delayed and showed no urgency. The spokesman of the police says that investigation into his murder has reached an advanced level.
His family, relatives, friends and all people who participated in the procession said that they represented many Burundians who are now mourning because of the growing trend of criminality.
