The Mozambican police have arrested four members of the former rebel movement Renamo in Ile district, in the central province of Zambezia, on charges of severely beating a local official.

One of those arrested, according to a report in Thursday's issue of the independent newssheet "Mediafax", is the Renamo Ile political delegate, Arcanjo Mariano.

The incident leading to the detentions happened last Friday. According to the local secretary of the ruling Frelimo Party, David Manhacha, Mariano and three other Renamo members, attacked the head of the Mualakamua locality, Xavier Macanisse, giving him severe head injuries.

A second victim of the Renamo violence was Silvestre Mahula, the community leader of Muhalele village. He was tied up, assaulted and suffered injuries to his abdomen.

The most serious allegation is that these attacks were ordered by a Renamo parliamentary deputy, Luis Boavida. Unless caught red-handed Boavida cannot be arrested, because of his parliamentary immunity.
