The chancellor of the University of Burundi, Gaston Hakiza called upon students to start new registration by next Friday.
He said this during a press conference he held yesterday in the University of Burundi. He promised that scholarships for students is to rise to 40,000 francs by January 2008. The chancellor broke a period of silence that has followed the forceful suspension of all students.
Despite this lure of increasing the salaries for students, they are not ready to register. Students still consider the moves of the education ministers as biased. The education minister, Saidi Kibeya, dismissed the association of students of the university and punitive actions against 23 students were announced. These students were denied access to the University of Burundi for a period ranging from two to three years. The authorities of Burundi are now faced with a problem of communicating with students after their association was dismissed and followed by a forceful suspension.
Mysteries still cover the forceful suspension. The police used teargases and many people were wounded. To date three bodies of police elements have been found in the campus of Mutanga. It should be mentioned that the leaders of the Students' Association decided the quit the campuses on the demand of the First Vice President of Republic, Dr. Yves Sahinguvu, who mentioned that it was not easy to oppose a decision made in a cabinet meeting. He promised that students will come back with the same representatives.

The crisis in this university has got ethnic developments. Students allege Dr Théophile Ndikumana who triggered the current crisis by taking pictures during an initiation process as having ethnic discrimination. He is allegedly accused of having refused an exam to the students of Institute for Pedagogy.
