Luanda — Angola's minister of Environment and Urbanisation, Diekumpuna Sita Jose, on Thursday in Indonesia, defended that climate changes are not only a problem of environment, but also of sustainable development, which demands urgent attention from the international community.
He underlined that the emission of carbon dioxide and the devastation of large forests have worldwide implications.
The minister has warned about the fact that climate changes will have more and more negative effects over the tropical regions, and, consequently, it is in this region where the tropical forests are located, which play a very important role in the reduction of the greenhouse effect.
Thus, projects of forests sustainable management, specially programmes for poverty reduction in the rural areas, under the millennium development goals, need the aid from the existing financial mechanisms.
In his opinion, the ways of access to funding, including the adaptation mechanisms and the tools of clear development in the ambit of the Kyoto Protocol can not depend on criteria and procedures that can hinder these initiatives in developing countries.
Sita Jose also said that after the year 2012 there has to be a global commitment, regardless of the development contest of each country. He also considered that with the achievement of peace, Angola has joined the Kyoto Protocol and the government has designed a local agenda for the records of the sources of greenhouse emission.
The Angolan delegation to the meeting comprises high rank officers with the Foreign Affairs Ministry and of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation, among others entities.
