Assab

The Ministry of Energy and Mines, in collaboration with partners, has installed wind-powered electric generators in different parts of the Southern Red Sea region, including Assab, Edi, Berasole, Beilul, Gahro and Rahaita, at a cost of 4 million Nakfa.

The 3 generators that have been installed in Assab could each generate 250 kilowatts of electricity, according to Mr. Samuel Baire, director general of the Energy Department in the Ministry of Energy and Mines. Noting that fuel consumption in the town would be reduced from 15% to 25 % as a result of the new initiative, he explained that the new wind-powered electricity would play a significant role in reducing air pollution.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ms. Tsigereda Woldegergish, the regional Administrator, indicated that the project would make a vital contribution in promoting socio-economic activities.

The project will continue in the remaining areas of the region, the reports added.
