Burundi: CNDD-FDD MPs Opposed to the Rejection of Charles Nqakula As a Mediator in Peace Process

14 December 2007

Bujumbura — The CNDD-FDD parliamentarian group is opposed to the refusal of Charles Nqakula, as the Burundi's peace process facilitator although this idea was expressed in the Questions' session in the national assembly. The chairman of the CNDD-FDD parliamentarian group, Hon. Evariste Nsabiyumva, says that â-šthere was no vote that would determine that members of the parliament rejected Charles Nqakula as the mediator in Burundi's peace process." He adds that â-šMPs have no prerogatives to dismiss a mediator." He also fustigates that the parliament's session of this 13 December was badly reported in some newsrooms.

The dismissal of Charles Nqakula as the mediator in Burundi's peace process was the recurrent wish of all members of the parliament who asked questions to first Vice-President of the Republic of the Republic, Dr Yves Sahinguvu. The chairman of the CNDD-FDD parliamentarian group says that the fact that no member of the parliament expressed no opposition to the dismissal of Charles Nqakula does not mean that they accepted it because there was no vote and as wishes of some MPs do not reflect the views of the whole parliament."

During the parliamentarian session of 13 December 2007 which was dedicated to questions to ministers in charge of security and the first Vice-President of the Republic, a sense of owning the the FNL-PALIPEHUTU issue's resolution was expressed. MP's fustigated the current mediator's leaning to the so called FNL dissidents who have got the sobriquet of â-šFNL fictive dissident combatants." The current mediator has vainly tried to boost the activities of the Truce Monitoring, for he failed to meet leaders of FNL-PALIPEHUTU who still demand that he should resign. The CNDD-FDD parliamentarian group has lost its majority in the national assembly following the dismissal of El Hajji Hussein Radjabu as the president of the ruling party. It still supports the ideas of the government which waits 31 December 2007 to witness the start of the punitive actions that are to hit FNL-PALIPEHUTU leaders if they fail to return to the Truce Monitoring commission before that date.
