Burundi: Students Downplay the Chancellor's Call for a New Registration

Bujumbura — Students of the University of Burundi did not register afresh although the chancellor urged them to. Today, students living outside the campuses were concerned. The chancellor of the university explains that students did not register today because many live upcountry.

If the registration could be carried out as planned, lectures would start by next Tuesday. More than 10,000 students of the University of Burundi were sent home following a decision made by the government on 7 December in what is explained as way to create misunderstanding between students and their lecturers. The government also decided to deny access to any local university for a period of 2 to 3 years to twenty three students. The bulk of those who are concerned by this punitive action are leaders of the Students' Association, ASSER, whose existence is illegal according to the government. This association has been dismissed and currently the authorities of the university are faced with the problem of getting an interlocutor that is accepted by students.
