A study that has mapped out a post conflict vision for Burundi's development agenda in order to usher in an environment of private-public competitiveness has been completed.

The study, named "The Vision for Commercial and industrial development strategy for Burundi," sponsored by a World Bank programme, Project d'Appui a la Gestion Economique (PAGE) (the Economic Management Project) was undertaken by the OTF Group, an international competitiveness consulting firm, set up in 1990 that helps to help build prosperity in developing economies.

This study was unveiled in a workshop at Hotel Source Du Nil and was chaired by the head of the cabinet in the office of the 2nd Vice President of Burundi, Mr. Appolinaire BUTOYI who represented the 2nd Vice President. Also present were the Minister of Trade, Industry & Tourism, Mrs. Euphrasie BIGIRIMANA. Participants at the workshop were drawn from government corporations, private companies and other business stakeholders, including economic experts in the fields of Industry, agriculture, tourism and the service finance and transport.

The study identifies specific priority sectors and ways to grow the Burundian economy in this new era of peace. Specific action points were also highlighted for government to act upon.

The five sectors identified, were coffee, tea tourism, mining and horticulture, these are able to bring growth at the bottom of the pyramid.

The study that was done over a period of two months in 12 different sectors, companies, corporatives, government parastatals etc. The study also included discussions with leaders of the country in the different sectors of the economy.

Specifically targeted also were students who form the vanguard of the future leadership of the economy. The final report of the study will be presented to government at the beginning of next year.

Mr Foster, a consultand in OTF group, said, "The key conclusion is that Burundi has enormous potential to grow its exports very rapidly but in order to do that, it must focus its efforts on a few key actions in a few sectors that have the potential for rapid growth and impact on rural incomes."

The coordinator for PAGE, Mr. Seleus Nezerwe told East African Business Week that the study would be presented to government and that government has already agreed to set up a joint committee called the National Council for Competitiveness and growth. This will be a public-private partnership, which will continue discussing the best way to implement the recommendations from the study.
