KHALID Bakhressa Jr died on the spot when his rally car Prodrive Subaru Impreza N12 hit a telephone pole while participating in Clubman Rally Championship (CRC) Zanzibar Rally on Sunday.

Uganda's Moses Matovu, his co-driver, survived the crash and is miraculously fine. Bakhressa Jr, 21, was the brother to 2006 Tanzania rally champion Omar Bakhressa.

Renowned cameraman Dean Kasasa who was covering the event told Daily Monitor on phone from Zanzibar that the duo hit a pole while attempting to save children. They were driving Omar Bakhressa's N12.

"He tried to save the kids and ended up on the pole. He died instantly but Matovu is okay," Kasasa said. Bakhressa Jr was in the first competitive section of 35km.

Kasasa added that Bakhressa Jr only drove his brother's car because his (Bakhressa Jr) Subaru had a mechanical problem, thus competing in N12 with Omar away in Malaysisa on a business trip.
