The Ministry of Tourism disclosed that over 80,000 tourists comprising Eritrean nationals living abroad and foreigners visited Eritrea this year, and that a total of 60 million US dollars has been earned from the tourism industry.
The director of research and statistics in the Ministry, Mr. Haile Alazar, pointed out that the main factor for tourist attraction is the prevalence of peace and security in the country, in general, and the rich tourism potentials, namely the different historical sites and relics, as well as the picturesque green belt of Semenawi Keih Bahri, in particular.
Mr. Haile expressed conviction that the number of tourists would increase in view of the major infrastructure works being put in place in different parts of the country and the facilities of the Free Economic Zone. He further explained that the Government is constructing different infrastructure facilities on the islands, especially the Dahlak Island, with the aim of enhancing the development of the tourism sector.
Noting that Eritrea is a country endowed with hundreds of islands, a 1,000 km-long virgin sea coastline and historical sites, as well as peace and security, Mr. Haile said that tourism could play a decisive role in the nation's economic takeoff as long as technological advancement is introduced for adequately harnessing the existing potentials. He also stressed the importance of service-rendering institutions to this end.
