The Ministry of Gender and Development in collaboration with the Liberia Crusaders for Peace (LCP) has intensified public awareness campaign against Gender based violence (GBV.
Speaking in New Kru Town over the weekend, which is one of the targeted communities of the campaign, the Coordinator on Gender Based Violence at the Gender Ministry, Madam Deddeh Quauqua said despite the passage of the rape law, there is still an alarming increase in rape.
She termed the alarming increase in violence against women, especially rape and sexual exploitation and other domestic violence as worrisome developments that must claim the attention of every Liberian.
The Gender Ministry Gender Base Violence Coordinator has regretted the idea that most men are not yet considering rape as a serious crime.
Recently, a 13 years old girl was raped and murdered in New Kru Town. Eyewitnesses told newsmen that the girl was brutally raped, flogged while the rapist toileted in her mouth. Madam Quaqua described the act as total madness against women, and expressed serious disappointment that up to this date, the security forces have arrested no one in connection to the madness.
She attributed the increase in rape to the lack of right enforcement of the law and the apparent weakness in the court system.
The Gender Ministry Coordinator on Gender Based Violence (GBV) said the anti gender-based violence campaign in the various communities is intended to sensitize women and girls to always report and other abuses for prompt actions.
Also speaking at the program, the Executive Director of the Liberia Crusaders for Peace, Ambassador Julie Andee Tarpeh said the crusaders will be engaged in interpersonal communication structures such cultural performances, drumming, one-to-one communication to educate the communities.
