A total of 79 Mozambican companies have received the "Made in Mozambique" stamp since the Ministry of Industry and Trade launched the campaign to "Produce Mozambican, consume Mozambican, Export Mozambican" in 2005.

Later this week, the number will rise to 82 when three companies in the northern province of Nampula are certified with the "Made in Mozambique" stamp on Friday.

On Monday 20 companies based in Maputo city and province were awarded the stamp and its accompanying certificate. They include companies in clothing, insurance, mineral water, furniture, printing, language teaching, travel agencies and cable TV.

At the ceremony, the Minister of Industry and Trade, Antonio Fernando, said the results of the campaign are visible, since many Mozambican goods are now competing with foreign products sold on the Mozambican market.

He gave as one example frozen chickens which have now "gained in competitiveness" compared with the chickens imported from South Africa or Brazil.

"Our mineral water, potatoes and beef are also competing on the market, and Mozambican consumers show a preference for them", he added.

Fernando took the opportunity to urge the companies certified on Monday to themselves purchase Mozambican goods whenever possible, thus serving as an example to the rest of the country.

He recalled that one of the objectives of the campaign was to revive Mozambican industries, and to increase the domestic consumption of their products - which meant improving their quality.

Thus among the main requirements for obtaining the "Made in Mozambique" certificate is that the company concerned must produce goods of high quality that can compete with those from other countries.
