Eritrea: President Conducts Tour of Inspection in Gash-Barka Region

Barentu — President Isaias Afwerki conducted an inspection tour of development and infrastructure projects in the Gash-Barka region from December 14 to 17.

The President visited the Moleber Agro-Industry Project, during which he observed different fruit and vegetable farming, as well as an animal feed center. He also inspected a water tanker used for irrigation purposes.

On the second day of the inspection tour, the President visited the Afhimbol Agro-Industry Project, during which he observed agricultural activities and discussed with experts the ways of putting into effect infrastructure works.

He also visited an experimental cotton plantation within the Afhimbol Agricultural Development Project. It was disclosed that a cotton plantation project would be introduced in Kerkebet once the experiment yields satisfactory outcome. President Isaias further made a tour of the Kerekebet sub-zone, during which he gave directives on undertaking studies for possible agricultural development activities in the area.

On Monday, he conducted a tour of development projects in the sub-zones of Golij and Tessenei, including the Fanko Tsimu'e Micro-dam where he visited an 80-hectare tomato plantation under cultivation through the "pivot center" agricultural machinery device. Subsequently, the President inspected the Fanko Rawi micro-dam project presently under construction by the Segen Construction Company.

Later on, President Isaias visited the Gerset Dam, which has already stored 49 million cubic meters of water, and a nearby site that is expected to be put under large scale agriculture farming.

Also during his visit in Tessenei, the President inspected the Ali Gidir Water Diversion Scheme that was destroyed by excessive floods and gave directives for its speedy reconstruction. Moreover, he visited the residence of veteran fighter Abu Tiara, as well as the performance of the government-owned garages of the region and the Homib Animal Farm Project being run by Operation Zone 1.

In conclusion, President Isaias inspected the Gash and Grasha bridges. The one that is currently under construction through the Gedem Company would link the sub-zones of Tessenei, Golij and the Upper Gash, and thereby give a major boost to development and infrastructure projects of the area. The President expressed appreciation to the accomplishments registered in the construction of the bridge.
